Another World is Possible: 2005 WSF
Where in the world can you find people thinking really new thoughts about the future of the world? The World Social Forum in 2005 in Brazil.

Where in the world can you find some people actually thinking some new big ideas about the future? Is it in New York City at the United Nations? No, that body thinks mainly in terms of the old idea of "nation state". Is it in Washington D.C.? No, that is the center of a superpower which seems to have trouble thinking beyond itself. Is it at the international financial institutions such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, or the World Trade Organization? No, they can't think beyond their narrow economic ideologies as if money/mathematics is the only way to see the world.

There is a place in the world where some new thinking is being done. People from all over will gather on January 26-31, 2005, in Porto Alegra, Brazil, in what is called the "World Social Forum." 60,639 persons have signed up so far. They gather under the theme "Another World is Possible".

A new feature this year will be something called the Billboard. "Participants who wish to communicate with the others and all that will follow the meeting from a distance the result of their work during the Forum, in terms of proposals of action or activity to build a new world, will be able to drive themselves, at the moment they find more appropriated, to a tent that will be located near the main entrance of each one of the eleven thematic terrains of the World Social Territory."

The proposals will be placed on the WSF website so everyone around the world will be able to see the ideas that are emerging from the conversations.

Here is the website address:

If you want, once the forum begins, feel free to let us know which ideas you think are feasible.

Below is a brief description of what the WSF is:

The World Social Forum is an open meeting place where groups and movements of civil society opposed to neo-liberalism and a world dominated by capital or by any form of imperialism, but engaged in building a planetary society centred on the human person, come together to pursue their thinking, to debate ideas democratically, for formulate proposals, share their experiences freely and network for effective action (see the Charter of Principles). The WSF proposed to debate alternative means to building a globalization in solidarity, which respects universal human rights and those of all men and women of all nations and the environment, and is grounded in democratic international systems and institutions at the service of social justice, equality and the sovereignty of peoples.
