Who Knows about Islam?
Edward W. Said tells the truth about Bernard Lewis, Samuel Huntington, and Karen Armstrong.

Edward W. Said writes a terrific article about Islam in Harpers Magazine. He recommends what to read if you want to know about the many communities of Islam. The article is a blistering critique of two widely-read books purporting to describe Islam, Samuel Huntingdon's The Clash of Civilizations and Bernard Lewis's What Went Wrong. He has kinder words about Karen Armstrong's Islam: A Short History, though he strongly recommends works which more specifically explore particular Islamic experiences. There is no way to describe anything called "Islam" in general; it exists only in particular ways in particular places.
